Know Your Rights for Accessible Parking

Jul 16, 2015

Recently, a client contacted the North Texas Fair Housing Center with a concern about accessible parking spaces. The client had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, making it difficult for him to walk back and forth to his car. Unfortunately, the apartment complex only had one designated handicapped parking space,no where near the client's unit, even though there are more than 200 units in the complex.  NTHFC was able to advocate for him, and  two handicapped parking spaces were created outside the client's unit.
Renters should know that under the Fair Housing Act's design and construction requirements, a minimum of two percent of the number of parking spaces must be made accessible. If you have questions regarding your right to accessible parking, please contact our office.
