NTFHC Funds New Elevator to Assist Adults wtih Disabilities

Jun 11, 2015

Storey Lane Chateau in Dallas currently houses 12 residents, adults with disabilities and/or developmental delays. Opening 20 years ago, Hazel Korol reports Storey Lane has been attempting to add an elevator for 10 years. All residents are employed and living independently. Increasingly, however, they are finding it more difficult to get up and down the stairs. “Not only are the residents getting older, so are their parents,” said Hazel. “I know of one resident who was not able to have his mother visit because he lives on the third floor.”

The North Texas Fair Housing Center funded a grant for Story Lane to install an elevator. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Saturday, June 6th. “We have been blessed that we were given this grant, it means so much,” Hazel said. “I was almost in tears. It has been a long struggle.” The elevator will increase access as well as allow residents to remain living independently as they grow older.
