NTFHC Makes Senior’s Home More Accessible

Apr 30, 2015

Beth and Sally are mother and daughter who live together in senior housing, and both women are people with disabilities. The women contacted the North Texas Fair Housing Center to ask for assistance to make their two bathrooms accessible, requesting shower chairs and grab bars to make it easier to bathe. They explained to NTFHC staff that they requested grab bars to be installed, but the apartment management claimed they did not have to install the equipment. After researching the complex’s website, NTFHC discovered that it is HUD funded senior housing, and therefore required to install the grab bars for tenants. NTFHC contacted the apartment complex manager, and explained what the clients needed. The management agreed to install the grab bars for the residents for no charge. NTFHC used our Community Fund to purchase shower chairs for Beth and Sally that were assembled and delivered by NTFHC staff.
